Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigated effects of orthographic factors on processing information in parafoveal vision. Eye tracking experiment with adults and 5th grade children revealed that the size of effective visual fields during reading is wider in post- than in pre-parfoveal area. In adults, overall effective visual fields were wider in horizontal than in vertical reading. However, the size of effective visual fields in pre-parafovea was larger in vertical reading than in horizontal reading. Simialr pattern of results were found In 5th graders. These results suggest that both adults and children adopt their occulomotor strategy in reading to their daily texts, which is typically horizontally rather than vertically.
