Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Some mammals has third dentition that degenerates and disappears before eruption. Tooth formed more than normal number of teeth is referred to as supernumerary tooth, and we experienced and reported cases actually thought to originate in the third dentition in humans. In this study, we focused on the control of the number of teeth, and targeted molecules that increase the number of teeth by suppressing functions, and conversely molecules that increase the number of teeth by enhancing functions. We reported that USAG-1 and BMP-7 may play an important role in tooth morphogenesis and size. We also reported the possibility that stem cells may be involved in the development of multiple supernumerary tooth in humans. Futhermore, analysis of CEBP / β and Runx 2 reported that epithelial mesenchymal transition enabled disengaged odontogenic epithelial stem cells to develop supernumerary teeth.
