Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study is a basic study to investigate that the elderly skeletal muscle plays a role of a reservoir of water in body as a new concept. We have recommended the making the body that the elderly do not get dehydrated.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、猛暑続きのなか、高齢者の熱中症は社会問題となっている。高齢者をとりまく様々な因子（高齢者の独居、老老介護、地球温暖化、都市化によるヒートアイランド、高齢者のやせ、サルコペニアなど）が高齢者の熱中症発生に関与していると考えられるが、本研究では高齢者の骨格筋の重要性を確認した。特に水の貯蔵庫としての働きからの視点で、高齢者骨格筋の役割を明らかにした本研究は、高齢者の熱中症対策に極めて意義あるものと思われる。
