Research Abstract |
A recent study has shown that Asian dust (AD) events are associated with an increase in daily mortality, and caused cardiovascular and respiratory problems in Seoul, Korea. Here, we report the danger of wind-borne AD on pulmonary and male reproductive system. ICR mice were instilled intratracheally with Asian dust. We found that inflammatory lung injury and DNA damages (8-oxo-dG production) were induced by Asian dust with Cl^-, SO_4^<2->, NO_3 and microbiological materials, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and beta-glucans. We examined the effects of Asian dusts toward allergic airway inflammation induced by antigen. AD induced the adjuvant effects to specific IgE and IgG1 production in serum by antigens. AD caused the aggravating effect on antigen-associated eosinophilic lung inflammation, which may be due mainly to the microbial materials and silica contained in AD. AD also caused the aggravating effect on Japanese cender pollen-associated allergic rhinitis in guinea pigs. Atmospheric exposure to molds, bacteria and silica-carrying AD may affect human health directly through allergic induction of respiratory stress. We also investigated the effects of AD on male reproductive system of mice. We found that AD has adverse effects on mouse male reproductive function, such as spermatogenesis. Our data suggest that AD may potentially influence spermatogenesis in men.
