Research Abstract |
Social interactions with peers in the play-group among children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between verbal communication skill levels among 4-year old children and their social interactions with peers in the play-group. Nineteen 4-year old children were observed to determine verbal communication skill levels in free play situation in kindergarten. The collected data showed that the amount of utterances differ greatly in individuals. However, in general, girls showed more affirmative utterances than boys, on the contrary, negative verbal expressions tended to be let out from boys more than girls. Three low-skill level (LSL) and three high-skill level (HSL) children were sorted out from the subjects to compare their social behaviors. The results showed that LSL children spent more time alone, displayed higher activity level and attempted to join play-groups, but their attempts did not seem to go on smoothly, because they received many rejections and were ignored by group members. On the other hand, HSL children were rather group oriented, and when they leave certain play-group, they were followed by playmate (s). Discipline in a nursery school. This study investigated how teachers discipline children in a nursery school. At lunch time and during picture book reading, teachers tended to induce children to take the action being required at each time. However during free play, teachers tended to leave allow the children's independent choices. Prohibition and explanation had an effect on the discipline for children. Using those discipline techniques, there was decrease in the repetition of actions that children had been warned against by the teachers. However, teachers did not always use these discipline techniques. The results suggested that teachers not only directed children's behavior but gave children an opportunity to independently observe what actions were being required of them.
