Research Abstract |
1.Subjects were mothers who gave birth to a clef lip and palate baby in the past but wanted to have a next baby. In addition, they were persons who gave consent to participation in the study after they got explanation of the study. Examinations about their processes of previous pregnancy and lineage were made after they finished registration for the study. 2.The subjects were given counseling by an obstetrician about planned pregnancy before they got pregnant. Then, they underwent various examinations including a medical examination by interview and an examination of vitamin-blood concentration. If they needed to undergo anemic treatment, they got guidance to improve their maternal conditions. 3.At the same time, the subjects tried to improve their life-style including dietary habits such as intakes of nonessential groceries, while referring a book titled "For my future baby" that tells about matters that mothers should pay attention during pregnancy and tells as to how to take various n

utrients. Furthermore, the subjects entered their everyday-foods in a specific reprinted booklet and a specialist of nutritional science gave guidance personally to them with the booklet. 4.Subjects who wanted to go through analysis of C677T polymorphism, which is a gene of methylenetetrahydrofolate (MTHFR), were given information about capable medical institutions to undergo a clinical study. 5.When their pregnancy was confirmed, the process of the pregnancy was recorded in a specific paper, and also regular examinations were made on the subjects. When the subjects were delivered of a baby, specific records of the newborn baby were taken, and the subject received supports from the specialists. 6.Blood samples were taken from the subjects who had given their informed consent to analyze their gene sample. 7.A specialist in analysis of a mutational gene gave us special knowledge including his opinion about the result of this study and specific methods for establishing future preventive measures. With his view, we reached conclusion that the importance was to continue to give mothers guidance of dietary that emphasizes folic acid nutrients, and to try to have preventive measures by avoiding risk factors, those of which are the present best measures. We also concluded that the result of the study would be useful for devising more effective preventive measures in future as tailored therapy based on genetic information. The above result is contributed to the journal of Japanese Society of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Less
