Research Abstract |
The aim of the present study was to propose a method of designing a rule set for metadata creation by utilizing a general model for the creation process at the conceptual level and applying a new concept‘orientedness.' 1.A method was proposed to design cataloging rules by utilizing conceptual modeling of the cataloging process, and also by applying the concept of orientedness set out in the previous study. Also, a general model for the cataloging process at the conceptual level, which is independent of any situation, system, or cataloging code, was proposed. The design method was made up of several phases : (1)Phase 0 : Specifying functional and non-functional requirements by use of orientedness. Cataloger tasks, which are constituents of the cataloging process, are also defined. (2)Phase 1 : Building a core model, which consists of (a)basic event patterns under each task, (b)action patterns applicable to each event, and (c)orientedness involved in an event and action pair. (3)Phase 2 : Propagating the core model to reflect the characteristics of an individual data element. Next, the propagated model is defined by choosing pairs of event and action patterns while referring to orientedness, in order to match a particular situation. 2.The proposed design method was applied to the new issue of recording evidence which explains why and how the data values are recorded for elements. Recording evidence is beyond the scope of conventional cataloging practice and rules. However, it was shown that, by following the design method, proper rules for recording evidence were obtained. 3.A way to minimize costs and effort in recording evidence was proposed. First, a scenario in which a cataloger and a system interact with each other in recording evidence in bibliographic records for books was proposed. Second, a prototype system was developed in accordance with the scenario and an experiment was conducted to examine the system's performance.
