Research Abstract |
Subjects and Methods. Experiment 1 : Subjects consisted of 17 healthy individuals. Subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups as follows : a low-frequency supraliminal stimulation group (0.2Hz, stimulation with 1.2x stimulation threshold), a low-frequency subliminal stimulation group (0.8 Hz, stimulation with 0.9x threshold), and a control group. Experiment 2 : Subjects consisted of 2 patients with Parkinson's disease. For rTMS, concave round coils were placed on the motor cortex (M1) and prefrontal cortex (Fz) of each subject in the sitting position at rest. Motor threshold, Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), CSPs, and F waves were measured before and after stimulation, and changes were compared. Waveforms were measured on the right abductor pollicis brevis muscle. MEPs were measured on application of 1.2x threshold stimulation at rest. CSPs were measured at the same stimulation using electromyography biofeedback to apply voluntary contraction at 15% of maximum muscle activity. Results

. Experiment 1 : No significant differences were observed in Motor threshold, MEP latency, MEP amplitude, MEP area, and F wave amplitude before and after either M1 or Fz stimulation in all 3 groups. In the low-frequency supraliminal stimulation group, significant prolongation of CSPs was observed in Fz stimulation, while no significant differences were observed with M1 stimulation. In the low-frequency subliminal stimulation group, significant prolongation of CPS was observed in M1 stimulation, while no significant differences were observed with Fz stimulation. In the control group, no significant prolongation was observed with either M1 or Fz stimulation. Experiment 2 : No significant differences were observed in Motor threshold, MEP latency, MEP amplitude, and F wave amplitude before and after Fz stimulation. In the low-frequency supraliminal stimulation, significant prolongation of CSPs was observed in Fz stimulation. Conclusion. The findings suggested that Fz low-frequency supraliminal stimulation and M1 low-frequency subliminal stimulation applied under the rTMS conditions in the present study facilitated intracortical inhibition.
