Research Abstract

The two main lines of this research involve: (1) studies on the appearance mode of anticipatory response and the evaluation of adaptive process in a serial motor skill learning; (2) studies on the effects of acquisition of a different serial motor task on the appearance mode of anticipatory response in adaptive process and robustness of adaptability. The first experiment examined the effect of the type of frequency distribution of four inter-stimulus interval (ISI: 300,400, 500, 600msec). Undergraduate students (n=20) tracked in feedback control phase using a tracking task of serial patterns. The results indicated that the type of frequency distribution of anticipatory response depend on the ISI, but not on each serial position of the pattern. The second experiment examined the role of anticipatory function in both feedback and adaptive control phase for the changed serial position. Results found that for the adaptive control phase, although the anticipatory response in feedback contro … More l phase decreased, anticipatory response reduced to the number of trials for adaptive criterion after that. Using four different serial tracking tasks, third study examined the appearance mode of anticipatory response and the robustness as a criterion for evaluation of adaptability in the feedback control phase and adaptive control phases(1):changed serial position and adaptive control phase(2):changed ISI. Forty participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n=10 per group) in each stimulus(S)-response (R) task: forced pace tasks: S-S and S-R group ; self paced tasks :R-S and R-R group. The results showed that in the feedback control phase R-S group indicated higher accurate response than other groups. In the adaptive control phase (1) S-S group further revealed high adaptability. In the adaptive control phase (2) R-R group, which learned the contextual structure of serial pattern showed higher robust response than other groups. These results were discussed in term of sequential dependency in serial motor skill learning. Less
