Research Abstract |
Trees in school campus are very impressive to children, because the trees stand long there and children are familiar with the trees every day in their school life. Those biological resources are very useful for science instruction in elementary school on the aspect of recycle of biological materials in the nature, if we can isolate the characteristics of the biological resources in school campus and construct a curriculum for understanding of the recycle. In the present project we extracted the following characteristics of trees and living materials including garbage of "kyushoku" as useful teaching materials and presented a curriculum for understanding of recycle of biological materials in the nature within the school campus. We made the database of trees in the elementary, lower secondary schools and kindergarten attached to the Faculty of Education, Kumamoto University. The electric field guides can search the trees in the campus from places, names, characteristics, fallen leaves and pollens of trees. We developed convenient plates for detection of bacteria from the grass compost place that are identified as one of the decomposer in the nature. This curriculum, using the database of trees, provides comprehensive understanding of the cycle of the biological materials in the campus and introduces sustainable motivation of children for searching the characteristics of the nature. Additional software of electronic album that can combine digital contents (sound and movies) promotes the education of IT literacy in the procedure of making the album by themselves. For locating the above teaching materials in the developed new curriculum, we made a software for preparation of work-sheet, which works on their personal computer and introduces digital contents to work-sheet required for science learning. This promoted well the visible effect of the teaching materials.
