Research Abstract |
In the fields where abilities can be measured with achievement test as scores, some comparative researches have been conducted internationally. On the other hand, in the field of music, there have a small number of challenges for measuring the technical abilities in music. For repetitive learning such as arithmetic calculation and Chinese letter scripting lessons, it seems that the inborn gift abilities and training history in early ages may not affect in an essential way. However, as represented by perfect-pitch persons, it has been considered that basic abilities in music will be affected essentially by talents and the timing of training in early ages. But we consider that some basic abilities in music such as music dictation may be cultivated at any stage in elementary school and junior high school by daily training system. This research aimed at developing a training system for basic music abilities with which music teachers in elementary and junior high schools can cultivate basic

music abilities to children independent of their musical talents. At the first year of this project, we performed a field survey of the abilities of the children before training and stared to develop a software tool "diagnosis test for accords". Simultaneously, we have investigated the structures and problems in Japanese music education and suggested perspectives. In the second year, by using and improving the prototype "diagnosis test for accords", we developed a CAI teaching material named "Hear?" with a midi-piano. We applied and tested this tool to the fifth grade children at the university-affiliated elementary school for data acquisition. In parallel, we investigated teaching assisting methods at the faculty of education and its affiliated schools and surveyed the activities of music talent education. In the last year, we have developed a training material with IC recorder based on the data we obtained in the second year. With this material, daily intensive lessons were applied to each child. Effects from activities of outside school should also be put in mind. Statistics revealed that almost all trained children have shown some achievements in accord listening ability, and their interests in music were very encouraged by this method, which may show that our approach is successful.
