Research Abstract |
This study aims at the proper analysis of the European missionaries in late medieval period in the religious history of the Indian Subcontinent. Though it is assumed that their contribution to the emergence of Indian modern literature and other fields of cultural activities was quite significant, there is no substantial study to properly examine their impact at the dawn of the modern period in India has yet to be done. In this project the focus was put on the activities of the Jesuits and their Madurai Mission performed in southern Tamil area in late mediaval periods in Indian history. A special attention was paid to two prominent figures in their missionary history, from the viewpoint of "inculturation". As known generally, India, particularly South India, has been Hindu dominant sosiety, so that much adaptation policy is to be done in order to gain more converts from Hindus. That policy or missionary method is often called "inculturation" by missiologists. In this study project this term and its idea are employed to properly assess the cultural contribution of the Jesuits. The forthcoming collection of articles includes 1. European missionaries in late medieval period and modern Christianity 2. Catholic mission in Southern India and Hindu society 3. European missionaries and the dawn of print and press in South India 4. "Christianity in Asia" : A report on the 11th International Conference of IAMS 5. Cultural Historical Studies by Jesuits and the problem of interreligious dialogue
