Research Abstract |
The aim of this research project is to approach the European mysticism in the Middle Ages by using the method of iconology and religious folklore, following the two principle schemes. 1. To collect all kind of iconographies on "Christ" which have been widely used by European people in the Christian tradition since the Middle Ages. By the analysis of those iconographies, we try to reconstruct the "Christology" dominant in the mentality and the religiosity of medieval people in general. 2. To step in, from the basis of this iconological attempt, to the investigation of the Christology which appears in the thought of medieval mystics, e.g., Meister Eckhart or Johannes Tauler. What I have done in the fiscal year 2006 to 2007 is 1. the field works in Austria, Slovakia and Holland to collect iconographic material. 2. Some reports on the Christology of medieval mystics in the academic congresses and symposia, where I could also exchange some meaningful ideas with other researchers in the similar field.
