Research Abstract |
I have made researches on Byzantine lectionary manuscripts in European libraries such as British Library (London), National Library of Greece (Athens), Patriarchal Institute for Patristic Studies (Thessaloniki), Patriarchal Library (Istanbul), and Apostolic Library (Vatican). The relationship between texts and miniatures in the Byzantine lectionaries is investigated, and the saints calendar (Synaxaria) included in the latter half of the manuscripts is made into a database. As one of the concrete results, it can be pointed out that the manuscript Cod.Paris.Coislin gr.31 was made for the church Hagia Dynamis in Constantinople. Hagia Dynamis is known only from written sources, and by this discovery, we can safely assume that the church had been active until the beginning of the 12_<th> century In addition, I proved that the illustrated lectionary Cod.1 of the Iviron monastery on Mount Athos was produced for the chapel of St. James in St. Mary's church (Theotokos) in Chalcoprateia, Constantinople. Some iconographical peculiarities were explained from its patronage for St. James. Analyzing the synaxaria, we can presume the recension of unilluminated lectionaries. However, to establish the recension, collecting data is still required. Concerning the most luxuriously-illustrated lectionary, Cod.587 of the Dionysiou monastery on Mount Athos, I have almost written a monograph in English. I am collecting the illustration for the book from libraries.
