Research Abstract |
We urged our interdisciplinary project of uniting Shakespeare studies and intercultural communication studies as we planned : 1. Emi Hamana made oral presentations at the Society of Intercultural Communication in 2004 and the Shakespeare Society of Japan in 2006. She went to the United Kingdom in 2004 and 2006 to investigate the latest productions of Shakespeare in London and Stratford and also explored relevant materials in the British Library, etc. ; she also went to the Summer Institute of Intercultural Communication, Oregon, to investigate the latest development of the culture-based situation conflict model invented by Stella Ting-Toomey and John G.Oetzel. 2. Emi Hamana analyzed intercultural conflicts and resolutions in Shakespeare's ten plays of all genres, comedy, tragedy, problem play, history play, and romance, by means of the culture-based situation conflict model, considered the validity and limitations of applying the model to Shakespeare's works, and finally proposed a slightly modified version in order to analyze them more effectively. 3. Yukio Tsuda investigated intercultural communication theories and analytical models with special emphasis on the subject of language conflict, the main cause for intercultural conflicts. He set up his homepage in which he exchanged ideas and information with researchers here and abroad. Through these vigorous academic activities, he assisted the project to completion. 4. We had five papers and six books published from April 2004 to March 2007. 5. Developing the result of this research, Emi Hamana intends to tackle the subject of Shakespeare and intercultural performance.
