Research Abstract |
We have gathered lots of 《pamphlets》 (Bibliotheque Nationale) and the propagandistes literature like Jean Crespin's Martyrs and the books written by his friend Simone Goulard. We have pointed out by analyzing these documents that the way of listing all the victims of the massacre perpetrated by the catholics could perpetuate the Passion of Christ. On the other hand, the great controversy over the Sacrement find a special place in the Theatre des cruautes written by Richard Verstegan, ultracatholic, which shows the violence of the Protestants who didn't hesitate de massacre the priests by cutting and opening their abdomen - interest no doubt related to the controversy over the Sacrement. We also succeeded in analysing the travel journals of Jean de Lery and Andre Thevet. The way they tried to understand and to describe their violent cannibale practices proved to be profoundly influenced by the wester way of grasping the world. Our analysis on the representation of the violence in the works of the great Renaissance authors were also very fructuous. We could conclude, for example, that Rabelais's war description functions as a sort of political propaganda against Charles V, that Marguerite de Navarre uses the violent scenes like murder ou inceste as a framework to put the accent on the evangelical principles, that Agrippa d'Aubigne's Les Tragiques tries to demonstrate that Catherine Medicis was a great witch who break down the law and order of the France, that Protestants will finally win, not in this world but in the next word, blessed by God himself, etc. We will publish a book titled The Ritual Violence, another aspect of the Renaissance (Koudansha), a book based on this 4 years' study.
