Research Abstract |
Several fieldworks were conducted on matagi words spoken by matagi (bear-hunters) living in Ani, Akita, and in Nishimeya, Aomori prefectures. The linguistic levels dealt with on these fieldworks were the phonetic and phonological levels, lexico-semantic level, and syntactic level with phrases and clauses. Also, clothing, and some hunting tools were worn and were picture-taken to take them in a matagi lexicon. The lexical areas that the research was conducted on were words on daily life, hunting, food culture, rituals, and some other words such as Ainu words in the matagi vocabulary. that were needed to tape The vocabulary was taped with a video-camera and an IC recorder, but unfortunately some conversations were not able to be taped. The taped vocabulary was all put into letters and database in an alphabetical order. Then the materials were analyzed into the salient features of the matagi vocabulary and of all the Ainu words in it. Especially those Ainu words were classified into various classes to analyze them. That analysis was made public in the forms of oral presentation and written article in October, 2006 and March 2007 respectively. In order to tie all the analyses of the materials collected, a matagi lexicon with a few special notes with the origins of matagi and how and why the Ainu words are found in the matagi vocabulary were published as the final result of this research from Gendaitosho publishing company in February, 2008.
