Research Abstract |
This project aimed to identify the effects of one skill-based English program (henceforth called "Iwaki Program") offered at two public elementary schools in Yuri Honjo city, Akita since 2000, by following a group of graduates for three years at their junior high school. This group had three years of the Iwaki Program from Grade 4 to Grade 6, and entered Iwaki Junior High School in 2003 Data were obtained from (1) periodical observations of the students in classroom activities (video-taped), (2) a set of their achievement test scores, and (3) a questionnaire. The classroom observations were carried out by the researcher over the three years from Grades 7 through 9, to see how the students react to, or behave in, various learning activities in the English class. The test score data were obtained from a standardized exam administered by the school to measure the students' academic achievements up to Grade 8. The questionnaire was given by the researcher to these students toward the end of Grade 9, to gauge how they feel about studying English. This group of students was to be compared with two independent groups of the same age at N and K junior high schools, who did not experience a systematic English language program at their elementary schools. However, School K data had to be excluded from direct comparison with Iwaki because the targeted group became unavailable for the research after one year, due to school internal matters. The School N counterpart was available for three years, to allow classroom observations, provide test scores and run the questionnaire. Parts of the above data are presented in the researcher's papers listed below in section 11. These papers are reprinted in the final report (Form C-18) published in March 2007. The final report also contains summarizing discussions of all data, including additional data collected from the student groups at Iwaki and School K, who were one-year younger than the target groups.
