Research Abstract |
In order to select the materials of electrodes and proton conductive ionic liquids for fuel cells, chemical sensors, and other applications, the thermal stability, the ionic conductivity, the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction rate on noble metals, and adsorption behavior on noble metals have been investigated. Self-proton dissociative ionic liquids such as 2-alkyl imidazolium triflate and diethylmethylamine triflate (DEMATfOH) had better oxygen reduction reaction activity than non self-proton dissociative ionic liquids with Bronsted acid such as bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (HTFSI) added 1-ethyle-3-methylimidasolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (EMITfO), even both ionic liquids had almost the same ionic conductivity. The oxygen reduction reaction activity of 2-ethyleimidasoliumu triflate (2EtImTfOH) improved with trifluoromethansulfuric acid (TfOH) addition. The oxygen reduction reaction activity of DEMATfOH was better than TfOH added 2EtImTfOH, however the activity wasn't improved with TfOH addition. Therefore, the acidic ionic liquids are suitable for the oxygen reduction reaction, and DEMATfOH had acidic property itself. For the anion of ionic liquid, oxo acid such as TfO was better than imide acid such as TFSI in oxygen reduction reaction on noble metals. The imide acid showed poison behavior on the Pt surface, and the oxygen reduction reaction activity of Pt decreased with time. Ionic liquids absorbed perfluoromethanesulfuric acid membrane had better thermal stability than both of ionic liquids and perfluoromethanesulfuric acid membrane themselves, however ionic conductivity decreased a lot. N-phenylmaleimide - styrene / divinylbenzene co-polymer was stable in chemical and had good affinity with ionic liquids. N-phenylmaleimide - styrene / divinylbenzene co-polymer supported ionic liquid membrane had both good ionic conductivity and oxygen reduction reaction activity due to the absorbed ionic liquid property.
