Research Abstract |
Skeleton map is a data structure for constructing a precise map from its topological structure. A skeleton map is a kind of an outlined map but different from a conventional simplified map that is derived from a precise map. It is oriented to arrange spatial data in the basis of their topological relations so that it is different from the conventional map based on measure. The aims of this research were (1) defining data model with interval numbers, (2) testing a prototype software system, (3) improving description language, (4) generating data and evaluating the system with them, (5) establishing operations of skeleton maps, (6) developing an application system. After three years research, generation of skeleton maps of 120 subway (underground) stations, and improvement of running time of the prototype software system were investigated. A normalized (canonical) skeleton map was introduced that was a skeleton map with minimum data size among several skeleton maps that gave the same drawing. The descriptions with interval numbers in skeleton maps were performed in several cases only. In the final year, focused to develop a practical application software, a program was implemented that can render the data of skeleton maps with the Google Maps on the same browser. A navigation guide system in campus area and insides of buildings with photographs and three dimensional images was also developed and a new task remained that generated the data for the navigation guide system from skeleton maps of the campus and the buildings.
