Research Abstract |
Background : Fast imaging employing steady state acquisition (FIESTA) has been reported to be suitable for evaluation of adult congenital heart disease. Purpose : To assess the applicability and limitation of MR, angiography using FIESTA in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children. Methods : One hundred eleven patients with congenital heart disease underwent MR angiography using FIESTA and the 3D Gd-enhanced fast SPGR technique after parental informed consent. The measurements of the vascular diameters and diagnostic accuracy of the two techniques were compared. Results : Correlations between FIESTA and the 3D Gd-enhanced fast SPGR technique were excellent in measurement of vascular diameter. The agreement of the vascular diameters in the Bland-Altman method was good. However, MR angiography by 3D Gd-enhanced fast SPGR had a higher resolution than that by FIESTA. Due to signal loss caused at the regions of vascular stenos is or Blalock-Tausig shunt on FIESTA, we could not evaluate the vascular diameter or patency at those lesions. Conclusion : FIESTA is a useful technique of non-enhanced MR. angiography for non-invasive diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children. However, MR angiography by FIESTA was not adequate for evaluation of vascular stenosis.
