Research Abstract |
This research is part of an international project named PRENEVE (Premature infants' Network on Vocal and Emotional analysis). Communicative musicality (CM) theory deals with a basic mechanism of human communication starting right after birth. (Trevarthen & Malloch 1999) CM consists of three elements, pulse, quality and narrative within interactions between infant and parent, which can be qualitatively and quantitatively measured by acoustic visual analysis. We identified CM both in full term and premature infants in Japan, suggesting CM to be an innate human endowment for communication underpinning attachment formation and language and social development. We investigated CM in three situations of infants with their mothers. Interactions were analyzed using Onossoki WS5160 yielding following results : CM was evident in a full term infant recorded within an hour of birth in delivery room. CM was identified in two premature infant and mother dyads within an NICU. The CM in two premature infant dyads differed with the former showing well balanced CM while the latter a less well balanced CM. CM was detected in the fifth session of kangaroo care between a mother at high risk of abuse and her infant after successful crisis intervention. All dyads showed a basic pulse unit of 0.7 second interval. Vocalizations in premature infants were less frequent and softer.
