Research Abstract |
The present study aimed to identify and demonstrate the effects of educational contents and methods for developing effective physical assessment skills required by parents following the sudden illness of a child. In order to investigate educational contents, a survey was conducted on 1,373 parents whose children were attending nursery schools. It was found that the support required by parents following the sudden illness of their child included the following: support that allows parents to make decisions by themselves, support that promotes the use of telephone consultation, and support that emphasizes the efficacy of public information. Based on the survey results, as an educational teaching material, an A6-size brochure was created. In order to investigate the effects of the teaching material, an anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted on 518 parents of kindergarteners (experimental group: n=282; control group: n=236) before they received the teaching material and 2 months later.

In the experimental group, the percentage of parents who observed "continuous fever" after 2 months was found to be higher before the distribution of the material (P=0.0802). Although fever was the most frequently occurring symptom in both groups, such a difference was observed only in the experimental group, indicating that the subjects in the experiment group acquired a broader perspective for observation. In both groups, a significantly higher percentage of parents indicated they have "recognition of the availability of the pediatric emergency telephone medical consultation" after the distribution of the teaching material. This recognition was also compared between subjects with and without the experience of sudden illness in each group. Although a significant difference was observed in both subjects with and without the experience of sudden illness in the experimental group, a significant difference was observed only in those with the experience of sudden illness in the control group. The fact that this percentage increased after the distribution of the teaching material in the experiment group, regardless of whether the subjects had the experience of sudden illness, indicated that the material was also effective for facilitating the recognition of the availability of telephone consultation, even for those who had not experienced sudden illness.
