| Research Abstract |
The objective of this research was to examine the actual status of nursing services for families with high-risk children and effective methods of related assistance. It consisted of work on the following four tasks : 1)study of the perceived difficulties in nursing services for families based on group interviews with nurses employed in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), 2)holding of meetings for a case study on the facts of nursing services for families, 3)interview survey with families with high-risk children concerning their family functions and how roles among family members are coordinated, and 4)a study of families with healthy children for the purpose of comparison with families with high-risk children in respect of family function and stress felt by family members, etc. in relation to family development.
The main difficulties perceived by NICU nurses were connected with cooperation with other hospital departments and professions as well as intervention in coordinating the roles of family members. While the situation varies with the facility, cooperation with other departments requires the establishment of methodology for information collection to facilitate it. In connection with coordinating the roles of family members, nurses pointed out the difficulty of intervening in family functions. In response, the researchers interviewed family members mainly on the question of how they had coordinated roles in the family, and made a corresponding classification utilizing a model for family life competence. This model is applied in clinical practice and can possibly be put to effective use, but is not designed specifically for families with children in NICU. For this reason, the items of assessment were studied on the basis of documentation and the results of this research. The efficacy of these assessment items has not yet been evaluated, and this remains as a task for the future.
