Existing view of nursing and nursing skills are often not enough to handle recently burgeoning addictions, such as alcohol dependence, and puzzlement experienced by local society and clinical practice is not negligible. Therefore, Japan Society for Study in Addiction Nursing was established to clarify characteristics of addiction nursing. The Society made studies on differences between existing and addiction nursing, expertise in addiction nursing, and characteristics of addictions as disorders by holding annual academic meeting and through case conferences, hospital ward tour for study, and discussion with staff. istening to and receiving them. Addictions are often accompanied by trouble of personal relationship, family, way of life, and loss. Therefore, it was recognized that addiction nursing have characteristics that nurses need to practice with thinking reflectively on humanity, family, life, and way of life ; working together with personnel in different occupation and facilities ; participating in self-help groups for their own development, and keeping a close eye on the patient and his/her family together. Further, it was also confirmed that expertise of addiction nursing consists nursing care, which encourages and keep an eye on the patient and his/her family, but not which gives nursing care in a unilateral way. In our society with burgeoning addictions, it is required not only on-site education and training but also to provide education for addiction nursing as basic nursing education.
