Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research is aiming to evaluate the public transport level considering especially the requirements of an ageing society. Travel behavioral data from electronic tickets are used to understand travel patterns as well as to extract performance records. The research is currently still in its initial stages. During the first project months discussions with Shizutetsu, the transport operator and data provider for our case study, have been held to better clarify the potential contribution of this research. Data have been obtained and initial analysis is in progress. In a first step panel data of usage are created from the data in order to understand longer term travel patterns.

Furthermore, accessibility indicators have been reviewed during the last months and the theoretical framework for this research has been further refined. Finally, previously collected questionnaire data from Shizuoka have been reviewed in order to extract information relevant for this project.

2 :  Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research is fairly on schedule though the initial data processing requires longer time than initially expected. Especially extracting the longer term user records of older people from a large dataset. Initial data problems are currently being sorted out. Furthermore, due to personal circumstances of the JSPS scholarship recipient the research is slightly delayed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In general the research will follow the initial proposal. In this fiscal year the data analysis will be continued. Usage patterns of older people will be extracted and analysed to understand the impact of service quality on public transport usage. Special emphasis will be given to the effects of service changes on usage. From this the basis to establish service quality indices will be established.
