|Outline of Annual Research Achievements
In H28 we collected audio and video interview and workshop data at Saga University Hospital. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 nurses of differing seniority on the topic of their work with medical records, and two workshops to compare the use of paper and electronic records in their work practices and two creative writing/drawing workshops to uncover the aspects of ‘mind’ in the nurses’ caring work. A feasibility workshop was also done with staff at a care home.
Data was categorized according to explanations of discrete events (interactions with technology), the method of ‘recognition’ of patients, the form and detail of the record and the ‘mind’ (feeling, thought) of the nurse when they use the technology.
|Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress
2 : Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Following this year’s plan, we did the activities to gather data for the first stage of the project, to understand current use of electronic medical records by nurses and their sense of ‘caring’ in their daily practices. We discovered that paper and electronic records afford very different uses in expressing nurses’ caring and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We learned that the workshops themselves provide a unique forum for nurses to express their ‘caring mind’.
A website was created for the project: http://labhope.com/medsharecare/
The project was reported at conferences/symposia in the UK and Japan. Discussions with international researchers helped provide a new perspective on the project, including sociological understandings of the body and non-human actants in modeling care.
|Strategy for Future Research Activity
In H29 we will follow our original plan using the data collected in H28:
Catalogue the daily caring practices and evaluate ways of expressing the: 1. Develop a model to support the expression of these daily caring practices 2. We also intend on conducting further workshops at the care home if possible to compare with expression of daily caring practices done in the hospital.
In H30 we will explore the introduction of the model into nursing work practices through design/evaluation workshops.
