We have found the increase of iodoethane concentrations in the bottom water of the Funka Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, 1 month after the spring diatom bloom. We made a hypothesis that volatile organic compounds are produced from ocean sediment, and carried out ocean sediment observation in the Funka Bay and Bering and Chukchi Seas. From the repetitive observation in the Funka Bay, we found drastic increase of iodoethane in the surface of the sediment on sea floor during the spring diatom bloom. And we carried out dark incubation using diatom aggregate collected by plankton net during the bloom. The incubation experiment results showed that the diatom aggregate produced iodoethane 3 days after the start of the experiment. Another incubation using sterile diatom culture also showed the same results.
