Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Winter thunderstorms along the Sea of Japan are famous for energetic lightning discharges. We have newly designed compact radiation detectors to observe the high-energy atmospheric phenomena from thunderstorms and lightning. We deployed them in the Ishikawa and Niigata prefectures in Japan, and successfully detected several gamma-ray radiation events from winter thunderclouds. Furthermore, we discovered photonuclear reactions triggered by lightning discharges in 2017.
