Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study investigated the participation in meetings conducted using English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). The contribution of the study is summarised into three points: 1) Understanding the challenges faced by Japanese people participating in such meetings, 2) Analysing the process of how Japanese participants develop their English skills to actively speak and listen in such meetings, and 3) Modelling the learning process of the pragmatic English skills of these participants based on the experiential learning theory (Kolb, 1984). Using the data from nonparticipant observation of ELF meetings and qualitative interviews of Japanese ELF users, this study analysed their challenges and the learning process of participating in ELF meetings. Based on these findings, the author proposed educational imprecations to Japanese higher education, on how to teach students to actively participate in meetings using ELF.
