Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project sought (1) to compare the language use of female characters in Japanese translations of English novels and novels originally written in Japanese and (2) to investigate translators’ norms and readers’ expectation for translated texts. The study revealed that translations into Japanese use more feminine language than novels originally written in Japanese and that translators and readers were likely to be influenced by the norms of feminine language. The outcomes were presented at three international conferences, two domestic conferences and a public lecture. These presentations were developed into articles, which were published in one international and two domestic journals, as well as a book chapter, all peer-reviewed. In addition, The Palgrave Handbook of Literary Translation was published from Palgrave Macmillan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
