| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The process by which “music critic as a profession” were established in modern Japan was explored through the editorial policies and tone of major music magazines from the late Meiji period to the early Showa period, as well as the relationship between Art Society in The Japan Association for the Promotion of Various Studies(Nippon Syogaku shinkou iinkai) and the "Overcoming modernity" roundtable discussion. Motoo Otaguro, Kazuyuki Toyama, and Hidekazu Yoshida were paid particular attention. As a result, it was found that Otaguro's "Music and Literature" prompted the emergence of critics who led the music world, and that during the total war, critics were divided between the tendency to regard Western music as absolute and the tendency to respond to the current situation with the music of various ethnic groups, and that a new model for training critics was established with the establishment of the Department of Musicology at Tokyo University of the Arts.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本における「職業としての音楽評論家」の成立過程は音楽史研究において見過ごされてきたテーマである。音楽評論家の集団としての「音楽論壇」の成立と総力戦大戦下での全国学会での議論、東京芸術大学音楽学部楽理科の設置をめぐる経緯を詳らかにした結果、職業としての音楽評論家が時局を反映する評論活動を展開し、段階を追って近代西洋音楽を社会に定着させたことが明確になったことは、音楽史研究のミッシングリンクを埋める学問的意義があった。研究の波及的な意義は資料による歴史研究、個人研究に基づき、音楽評論そのもの、音楽評論家の職業と養成について、歴史的視座から現在の社会的機能や課題を論じる前提を確認したことにある。
