Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research examines the founding process of National Theatre to complement the discussions on the concepts of nation in relation to Harley Granville Barker’s scheme for national theatre. There is broadly shared ‘the people’s culture’ that had urged spirited discussions in the early 20th century toward the backdrop of the idea of national theatre, while cultural diversity is also indispensable factor to stimulate and objectify ‘the people’s culture’. This study clarified the concepts of nation by shedding light on the context of ‘the people’s culture’ that had influenced on Barker’s scheme of national theatre.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
