| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research analyzed a series of social interactions in a science lab by a multimodal method in order to investigate better Japanese language support for science students in the global environment. As a result, it was found that the participants of the lab were engaged in the meaning-making interaction leveraging a multiplicity of modes, including languages, nonverbal behaviors such as body movements and gazes, visual information such as figures and pictures, tools and spaces.
Based on these analysis results, the author developed a pilot Japanese-language support website, ACTION TUAT https://tuataction.com/ for science students with an emphasis on multimodality. The aim of the website development is for the students to expand their experiences in Japan through better interaction with people in a variety of situations in science universities.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の社会的意義は、留学生のみならず日本人を含めた理系大学コミュニティの成員全てを複数言語話者と捉え、多様なモードによるコミュニケーションの教育の在り方を探った点にある。日本語教育の現場では、対象言語である日本語を他言語とは切り離した状況で教育を行う傾向にある。しかし、理系留学生は、日本語だけを駆使してコミュニケーションを行う必要は少なく、実場面では複数言語使用者として、その場その場で可能な限りのリソースにアクセスし、他者とコミュニケーションを行っている。本研究の成果は、この現状を踏まえた日本語教育の在り方のひとつとして社会に貢献すると考える。
