Outline of Annual Research Achievements

植物プランクトンの季節的なブルーミングは海洋生態系を支える第一次生産に大きく寄与している。季節的なブルーミングは水温の季節差が明瞭になった約36Ma(始新世後期)に高緯度で開始したと推定されている。この推定は赤道太平洋と南極海の海底コアの底生有孔虫の研究結果である。現在、第一生産が特に高い北大西洋沿岸ではブルーミングの開始の起源と始新世後期頃の第一次生産の変動は研究されていない。両者の関係が明らかになれば季節的にブルーミングを起こす植物プランクトンの出現が海底生態系を含む海洋生態系の炭素循環に与えた影響を初めて評価できる。この課題では北西大西洋ニューファンドランド沖で掘削された始新世後期～漸新世前期の海底コアの底生微化石群集と海底堆積物の化学組成を分析し、第一次生産の変動を推定した。第一次生産の新しい指標を模索するため、第一次生産が明瞭に変化した暁新世前期／中期境界と第四紀の底生化石群集も検討した。
第一次生産の変動を推定するため、蛍光エックス線分析装置を使った堆積物中のバリウム／アルミニウム比の分析と底生有孔虫(大きさ250マイクロメーター以上)の産出量(個／cm２／千年)の検討を行った。元素比は33.7～33.5Maまで0.01以下だったが、33.5Ma(漸新世前期)以降0.02以上に明瞭に増加した。第一次生産は33.5Maに増加したことが示唆される。 底生有孔虫の産出量は33.9Ma(始新世／漸新世境界)付近で急増した。 2つの指標が示す増加の時期は異なるが、北西大西洋では第一次生産の増加は始新世／漸新世境界以降に起きた、と推定される。第一次生産の増加の時期は赤道太平洋と南極海と比べて明らかに遅い。
底生生物のうち貝形虫は暁新世前期／中期境界および第四紀の氷期・間氷期の間で明瞭に産出量や組成が異なっていた。貝形虫群集も第一次生産の変動の指標になり得る。
