Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Sialic acids are components of the carbohydrate chains of glycoproteins and glycolipids. Our previous studies reported that sialic acid containing glycolipids produce nociceptive behavior and intraplantar injection of sialidase attenuates mechanical allodynia during inflammatory pain. In inflamed skin, sensory nerve fibers elongated into the epidermis. In the present study, we showed the decrease of long fibers in sialidase treated skin tissues, suggesting that sialidase inhibited the elongated nerve fibers in the inflamed skin. Furthermore, the gene expression of sialic acid transferases and other glycosyltransferases in spinal cords were changed during inflammatory pain. These results suggested that sialic acids in the spinal cords and skin tissues play important roles during inflammatory pain.
