| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aimed to clarify the competency of Japanese public health nurses (PHNs) in coping with global society and to develop educational programs through a qualitative approach. Results revealed that PHNs need competencies related to the following: assessing health needs of culturally diverse populations in the community, collaborating effectively with other professionals or organizations to meet immigrants’ health needs, assessing health care needs of individuals and their family and providing culturally appropriate care, dealing with language barriers, advocating immigrants’ health and basic rights to promote social justice, identifying potential public health issues related to global situations, and acquiring a global perspective of their roles and missions. Some competencies are not fully covered in the basic education for PHNs, suggesting the need for developing educational programs to improve these competencies.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
保健師が取り組む健康課題は時代と共に変遷している。近年、国内の在留外国人数は増加し続けており、保健師が担う保健活動の対象としても一定の割合を占めている。また、感染症の世界的流行への備えや訪日外国人への健康支援ニーズも増加している。しかし、これらの活動は一部の保健師の経験に留まっており、保健師固有の実践知として共有されていない。本研究では、グローバル化に伴う様々な健康課題に対応できる保健師の能力を包括的に明らかにした。求められる保健師像が明らかになったことで、現行保健師基礎教育において強化すべき内容が明確になった。本知見は、保健師活動の学問的基盤である公衆衛生看護学の発展にも寄与できると考える。
