| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research, we examined the representation of monuments in French literature from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. First, we studied the monuments described in Emile Zola's novels and elucidated their function in his works. Secondly, we elucidated the relationship between Maurice Barres's nationalism and monuments by analyzing his novels that depict many monuments embodying national identity such as the Pantheon in Paris and war memorials.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
従来のモニュメント研究では、歴史学、社会学あるいは政治学の観点からモニュメントを考察していたが、本研究では、文学研究の観点から言語によるモニュメントの表象を分析した。文学作品でモニュメントが描かれるとき、作者の美学や思想に応じて、その意味やイメージが新たに創造される。本研究の意義は、こうした文学におけるモニュメントの再創造のあり方を検討することによって、モニュメント研究の新たな可能性を切り開いたことにある。
