Outline of Final Research Achievements |
By focusing on global commodity crops such as the sugar and coffee industries, this research project reveals that the knowledge, technology, and capital acquired by Japanese migrants in the U.S. territory of Hawai'i are essential elements in making agricultural policy and practice in Japan's tropical colonies. Furthermore, this research revealed that the sugar-producing areas in the Pacific, centering on Hawai'i, were interconnected by sugar companies, technical bureaucrats, etc., in opposition to the Atlantic sugar industry. This linkage represents a geopolitical composition that differs from the suzerain power sphere. Thus, through this research, we were able to empirically demonstrate the importance of examining the multi-directional movement between multiple empires and colonies and the multilayered ruling forces in examining the colonial history of the Pacific region.
