Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is the development of the new image device system that moves bumpily the screen reacting on projected image and spectator with continuous, organic, and dynamic movement. The screen aimed at the shape of "Folding screen" that was a traditional fixture and furniture of Japan. Because the folding screen could stand alone and it had the function of the module of division and connection. Outline of research 1. Research on image content on bumpy screen (1) Generation of effective projection CG image. One of most effective image is a simulation of the interaction between the biological sculpture model and the fluid. (2) Experiment concerning visual effects of folding screen to which image is transformed according to change in spectator's movement and position by generation of binocular vision CG image using lenticular lens. 2. Research on operation of bumpy screen (1) Experiments on basic operation of control bumpiness of screen by linear actuator. (2) Mounting of system that drives bumpiness of screen with matrix of small air cylinder. 3. Exhibition as presentation of research results At first, bumpy screen system was accepted to the art gallery section of ACM-SIGGRAPH2006, and research results were reported by the participation such as SIGGRAPH2006, SIGGRAPH2007, SIGGRAPH2008 and ASIAGRAPH2008 in a lot of exhibitions. The screen is capable of presenting 3D forms in just about video frame rate. It is also interactive and a number of users can interact physically with display and screen images at the same time. We separate system of image projection that provide high-resolution image and system of screen actuation that provide dynamic motion. Therefore we can achieve great performance. This results can expect not only the application to the media art and the contents industry but also the possibilities of giving new value to the traditional culture of Japan.
