Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to explain the surviving mechanism of small-medium-sire retailers in East Asia. The theoretical view in this study was family employment system. The things that we had done in this study were as follows. First, we surveyed and discussed the current analytical frameworks of the study of small-medium-size retailers, and developed some hypotheses. These works were started by re-thinking the framework which was provided by Takamuro and Ishii (2005). From an empirical view, we started the empirical investigation in Kobe and Seoul as the pre-research and operated some case studies. From theoretical and historical view, we started by reviewing the studies on small retailers in Japan and examining the distribution policies in East Asian countries. As the result, we focused on the two aspects: “family employment system" and "business succession". Second, we operated some ease studies in East Asia. The main method of the case study was interview to the small-medium-size retailers in Korea, Taiwan and China. Third, we operated survey research in Fast Asian countries. That research was operated in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China The number of the questionnaire which was distributed was 5,722, and the number of collection was 3.372. As the result, we succeeded to develop the database which would be able to become the bases of the further research of the retailers in East Asia. Finally, we organized working group which over 20 person who were academic researchers and business persons took part in. In this working group, we argued about the surviving mechanism of small-medium-size retailers in East Asia. In addition to this argument, we presented our research result on various conferences.
