Research Abstract |
We have made theoretical and experimental studies of conformations and dilute solution behavior of semiflexible star polymers and also of their phase behavior, taking as an example regular three-arm star poly(n-hexyl isocyante) (PHIC). The results obtained are as follows: (1) Theoretical study of the steady-state transport properties of semiflexible star polymers: The ratio of the intrinsic viscosity of the wormlike regular three-arm star chain to that of the corresponding linear one with the same total chain length has been calculated in the Kirkwood-Riseman approximation. On the basis of the numerical results so obtained, an interpolation formula for the ratio, which is useful for analyses of experimental data, has been constructed (published). he photometer has been tuned to the new light source and the performance of the photometer has been examined by the use of a standard sample. Then, static and dynamic light scattering measurements have been carried out to characterize poly(diisopropyl fumarate) samples, which has been found to be a semiflexible polymer (published), and also to determine the translational diffusion coefficient (In preparation). (3) Synthesis of regular three-arm star PHIC: We have first tried to synthesize regular three-arm star PHIC smiles by the Goodson-Novak method using a trifunctional titanium initiator. For our purpose of fine characterization, regularity of test samples, i.e., uniformity of the their arm length should be confirmed In order to determine the molecular weight of each arm of the samples prepared by the method, we have tried to hydrolyze the ester groups around the eater of three-arm star PHIC, finding no effective method of hydrolysis. We then have tried to prepare desired samples in another scheme, i.e., coupling three liner PHICs of equal length synthesized by living polymerization by the use of an appropriate trifunctional coupler reagent, a proper scheme being under investigation.
