Research Abstract |
In the present study we prove the generality of the symmetry-conforming property of the nano-order of point defects in ferroelectrics. We also utilize this principle to study the large electrostrain/piezoelectric effect and its relation with point defect species and concentration. The following results are obtained : (1) We found an aging-induced stabilization effect of ferroelectrics. In BaTiO3 and PLT ceramics the reverse transformation temperature increases with increasing aging time. This effect is fully explained by the symmetry-conforming principle of point defects. (APL 2005) (2) We found aging exists even in single domain ferroelectric samples. This proves that the volume effect due to the symmetry-conforming principle of point defects is the governing factor for aging. (PRB 2006) (3) We found the hybrid doping with both acceptor and donor can enhance the electrostrain effect due to aging. (APL 2006) (4) We found a large electrostrain effect also exists in a high lb system KNbO3. (APL 2007) (5) With different ferroelectric systems with different crystalline structures, we show that the symmetry-conforming principle of point defects is a general rule. (PRB 2008) (6) We proposed a basic rule that can control ferroelectric aging and its associated electrostrain. (APL 2007) (7) We found a new non-Pb piezoelectric system that possesses the highest piezoelectric property so far reported. (Patent filed, 2008)
