Research Abstract |
We accepted the request from the forklift truck drivers in dockyards to reduce the whole body for the measures of low back pain in early 1990's. Since then, we conducted the questionnaire study, measurement of whole body vibration and so on to clarify the relationships between whole body vibrations of forklift trucks and have pursued to develop the drivers seat that can significantly attenuate the whole body vibration. In the meantime, the new-seat was developed that consisted of three-dimensional structure fabric completely different from normally used polyurethane foam material and magnetic spring suspension unit. We focused it our attention on this factor and began to develop a new driver seat for the forklift trucks. The developing process urged us to confirm its attenuation of the whole body vibration and its effect on prevention of low back pain in the work place. The present study clarified the considerable decrease of the value and transmissibility of the whole body vibration at the field test defined by the CEN standard EN 13059. The questionnaire study on subjective fatigue symptoms and the subjective evaluation of the whole body vibration during a usual work week by the drivers also showed the positive effect of the newly developed seat. However, the measured value of the whole body vibration did not show clear decrease. The new seat might enable to increase the speed of the forklift trucks to cancel the decrease of the whole body vibration. The further study to measure the transmissibility of the whole body vibration of new driver's seat may confirm its effect in the actual working condition.
