Research Abstract |
This two-year research aims at a development of a novel compression coding technique for high-frame-rate motion images which maximizes the image quality within a restricted transmission bit rate. The detailed objects include (1) a development of an adaptive and local frame rate control technique for high-frame-rate motion images, (2) a derivation of a prediction technique for the temporal image quality for image sequences generated by (1), and (3) a development of a coding algorithm which maximizes the spatio-temporal total image quality based on the results (1) and (2). In 2005, we have investigated the issues (1) and (2), and proposed an adaptive frame-rate control technique which can adapt to non-stationary motion while suppress motion jaggyness. Based on the technique obtained in 2005, we have tried to develop a novel MPEG-4 encoder in 2006, which encodes a target image sequence with the "optimal frame rate" derived by maximizing the estimated total image quality (MOS). The resulting image sequences were compared to fixed-frame-rate ones to confirm the effectiveness of our approach. From these results, we believe that our final goals have been completely achieved.
