Research Abstract |
In order to understand relationship between red tide and turbidity in the Ariake Sound, SeaWiFS ocean color LAC data of chlorophyll a and nLw555, which indicates suspended sediment, from 1997 to 2004 was used. Number of available data per year can be used to identify the location of qualified data and neglect poor quality data from near coast and contaminated with stray light. Time series data of mean chlorophyll a and nLw555 data in the Ariake Sound and daily precipitation with two-week running mean were compared. Satellite chlorophyll a showed the maximum about 20 days after the precipitation peak. The increasing rate increased 1.45 with 10゜C increase of temperature, and the amount was 4.4 mg/m^3 with 10mm of precipitation. On the other hand, nLw555, indicating suspended sediment, showed the maximum about 10 days after the precipitation peak and before the maximum of chlorophyll a. Chlorophyll a and nLw555 showed generally inverse relationship; however, influence of turbidity to phytoplankton growth should be further verified. Analysis of daily data indicated that turbidity increase and chlorophyll a increase for spring and neap tides, respectively. This is consistent with Tanaka et al. (2005) who found similar relationship around tidal flat in the end of bay.
