Research Abstract |
The aim of this project is to re-evaluate the role of Newtonianism in the Enlightenment and modern European thoughts. It intends to shed light on the difference of the relationship between natural science and social ethics in early modern period and today and to compare it to 18^<th> and 19^<th> century Japanese thoughts. It concludes that a close relationship between Newtonian world view and selfreferential reason is seen in the Enlightenment The context behind it is the ancient concept of plural world that revived by modern astronomy. It also pointed out that the idea of the plurality of worlds was accepted and coexisted with Confucius philosophy in Edo period. It is certain that Japanese Confucius philosophy in the late Edo period had ability to absorb the impact of modern astronomy. It had no less potential than early Newtonianism in reorganizing ancient world view based upon Confucius doctrine and Christianity.
