Research Abstract |
The background of regionality and thought about ethnic minorities in the east part of Germany : The ethnic minority "Wenden" in the state of Brandenburg, where Peter Huchel lived untill the age of 60 before the emigration, have a feeling of partner and rival to the ethnic minority "Sorben" in the State of Sachsen that comes from the same Slavic origin. The "Wenden" were subsumed into "Sorben" in the socialistic ethnic policy in German Democratic Republic and raised their consciousness of identity as "Wenden" through it. The Gypsies (Sinti / Roma) were persecuted in the era of Nazism and excluded from the socialistic ethnic policy in GDR. GDR blamed the Holocaust on the capitalists in the West. GDR regarded the Jews on the one hand as friends, who were persecuted, but fought and built the socialistic state with the socialists, on the other hand as enemies, who have connections with USA and Israel. The Jews were positioned as religious group according to the socialistic ethnic theory. The background reflected Huchel's view of ethnic minorities : The "Wenden" were significant in Huchel's poetic landscape. He distinguished the "Wenden" from the "Sorben". Right after the Second World War he positioned the "Wenden" to the symbolic people of minorities, but disregarded them in GDR, because they were conserved as "Sorben". The Gypsies were persecuted in the era of Nazism and in GDR. Huchel was also persecuted in GDR. He projected himself upon the Gypsies in his poetry. He did not refer to the Holocaust. He used the word "Auschwitz" one time in an annotation on his poem, but this word had no relationship to the Holocaust. He made some poems not with images of the Jews in the real world, but with ones in the Old Testament.
