Research Abstract |
1. Studied "Historisch-kritische Nachrichten von Italien" by J. J. Volkmann, the most significant Rome-guidebook in the eighteenth century in Germany to graspt he essence of the Germans' honest expectation "Erwartungshorizont" (horizon of expectation) for touring Rome. 2. Gained concrete images of the city of Rome in those times with the help of typical visual guides of Rome, i.e. Vasi and Piranesi. 3. Created a chronological list of the Germans who visited Rome between 1740 and 1790. This work actually confirmed that there was a great wave of German artists and prominent people visiting Rome. Also examined the reality and meaning of their stay in Rome. 4. Topographically explored the areas in Rome where Germans congregated.. 5. Translated into Japanese and published two German essays about Rome "Ardinghello" by J. J. W. Heinse and "Begrabnis auf dem protestantischen Friedhof" byC. Ph. Moritz that show clearly the character of Germans' Rome-experience. 6. Examined_some typical Greco-Roman sculptures in Rome and Germany that influenced the German intelligentsia of the eighteenth century.
