Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to clarify the characteristics of Japanese who stayed in France during the period between the two World Wars, and more precisely, their contribution to the modernization of Japan. In order to lead to satisfactory results, we concentrated our attention on the relations between the esthetical quests and these of the identity. More concretely, we analyzed four cases: Tsuguharu Fujita (painter), Taro Okamoto (painter), Shuzo Kuki (philosopher), Jirohachi Satsuma (patron of the arts, founder of la Maison du Japon in the Cite Universitaire Internationale de Paris). The period that they stayed in Paris corresponds to that of the emergence of French modernist movements. As to the two artists and the philosopher, we tried to retrace how these Japanese assimilated French movements and participated to them. As to Satsuma, we tried to throw light on the processes and background of the creation of the Maison du Japon through researches of archives and documents about it. So, our research focused on their discovery of the western civilization correlative to that of their proper cultural identity.
